Samsung Gear S Review
The Samsung Gear S smartwatch is one of the first of its kind and the first Samsung networking smartwatch. Using its own line it can be used as a stand alone device for making calls and receiving notifications or it can be paired with your smartphone for added features. Your smartwatch will have its own phone line so you do not have to stay in connection with your smartphone at all times.
The curved display looks great and lays perfectly on your wrist. The curved screen takes to the natural curvature of your wrist.Whether you are checking messages or making calls you can scroll through the touch screen effortlessly.
You no longer have to be tied to your phone on outings. You can simply enable the auto forward option and all your calls and messages will be forwarded to you watch no matter how far you get from your phone.
Almost everything that you can do on your phone can be done with this smartwatch. Check messages, go online, email, social media and more. You can even stream your favorite music while out on a jog.
There are 3 ways that you can connect it to your phone, Bluetooth, remotely, and Gear only. Each of these has their own unique attributes.
Using Bluetooth mode it is connected to your smartphone using Bluetooth. In this mode you can receive notifications, calls, use app functions, and texts from your phone. You will need to set the mobile data to always on to use the call and text features.
You can connect remotely with the mobile network. When connected remotely you will get notifications and calls from your phone as well as your watch number. You will have limited use of some of the Gear app functions. When calls are placed they will be done so from the watch number when connected remotely. This is where you can enable the auto forwarding options.
While using the Gear only mode you will not be connected to your smartphone at all. The Gear S will run as a stand alone device. You will not have access to the Gear app functions and all calls or texts sent will be done through the Gear S phone number.
There are so many great features of the Samsung Gear S it is hard to include them all. Below are the most commonly asked about features.
This smartwatch features a stunning, two-inch curved Super AMOLED display that lays perfectly on your wrist making it easy to see all your rich notifications and information.
The large display measures 2 inches in diameter. The resolution is 360 x 480 for a 300 ppi density. The size may be quite large so you will have to like having a large watch on your wrist all the time if you plan on liking the Gear S.
If you plan on using it outside a lot you will need to buy a anti-glare screen protector. While the legibility and brightness is slightly above normal it is not enough for the direct sunlight.
The enhanced notifications feature brilliant color and better than ever notifications and alerts. Scroll through your social media or get updates to the weather, the notifications are better than ever.
It comes with a several great apps right out of the box, but you can download more through Samsung Galaxy Apps. The preloaded apps allow you to stream music, get directions with the build in GPS and so much more. You have 4 GB of memory to store your music and apps.
It also comes with your health in mind. There is a pedometer as well as S Health. S Health is used to manage your health. You can set fitness goals and record and check your progress, check your heart rate, and more. You do however have to be synced to the app on your smartphone to use this.
Colors – Wristband
The watch face itself is in black. The bands have the colors. Right now these are the band colors available to buy.
The wristband is replaceable but not by just any band. The watch is wrapped into the band like the Gear Fit. At the moment there are only 2 two colors out, the white band and the black band.
However, soon replacement bands will be released in an array of colors and designs. The most popular being made of silicone.
You can choose to get your phone for your service carrier or you can get a factory unlocked version. When you get the factory unlocked watch you just place your Sim card into the watch.
You will need to add another line to your phone service. Your watch will have to have its own line for networking, like a tablet. But you can use the same phone number that you have with your phone line by just using the auto-forwarding.
It works automatically when when your phone and watch are unconnected, so if you go for a run or didn’t feel like bringing your phone, all your calls will be auto-redirected to the Gear S. When you get back within reach your phone will automatically connect again.
Water and Dust Resistant
The Gear S smartwatch is water resistant but not waterproof. It has been tested to be resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Although the manual states that you should not place your watch in running water such as tap water. So with this said you should not wear your watch in the shower.
The battery life really depends on what you are using it for. If you are using it as a stand alone phone then you will need to charge it daily most likely. If you do not play with it a lot or have all your notifications sent to you then you can get up to 2 or 3 days on a charge.
The smartwatch charges within a couple of hours. The charging dock that comes with it has a portable battery within it. This is nice for when you have no other means of charging the watch. You can just place it into the dock and it will charge. It only holds one charge before they both need to be recharged using the USB cable.
Most customers are very happy with it. The fact that the watch is a phone in itself has people head over heels for it.
- Built in GPS
- Keep track of your activities more accurately to stay fit
- Answer calls while listening to music
- 4GB of storage
- Make calls, text, and receive notifications without your phone
There is one flaw to this watch that some people find to be a major flaw. You have to have a Samsung phone to connect and initialize it in the beginning in order for the phone to be functional. It must be a Samsung phone not a tablet or other device.
Once you are done with the initial set up you can disconnect from the Samsung phone and use it on its own. If you do not have one you will need to borrow one from a friend or family member for the initial set up.
The price of the Samsung Gear S smartwatch will depend on your service carrier and contract period. At this time with AT&T the cost starts at $199 with a 2 year contract and $10 a month line fee. To buy through Verizon, the price starts at $399 with contract. The factory unlocked smartphone starts at $346. However with this there is no contract time with this.
